Q:  How long is the work performed by a licensed contractor guaranteed for?
In California, a licensed contractor must guarantee his work for a 10 year span if it is "structural" in nature. This means the structure of your home has been touched or altered; such as a room addition, loft or balcony. Any other non-structural work must be guaranteed for 7 years.
Q: Do I really need a permit to remodel my house?
Yes!  Believe it or not, your permit is there to protect you as a homeowner. If the work performed is not done correctly, an inspection by a city building official will catch the mistake before the work can continue.

Q: How much does it cost to build per square foot?
If you building a new home, you should consider that the cost per square foot may look extremely high
on a "square foot" basis because of the factors in preparation of building and not the literal building itself.

    Land cost
    Utilities
    Survey
    Grading plan
    Taxes and fees
    Preparation of land
    Improvements to surrounding areas
    Blueprints
    Engineering
    Taxes and Fees
    Permits

All of these items should be figured into your price per square foot. However, because of the exorbent amount of costs that come with building in California, you might have to adjust your budget. Just think, you haven't even bought a single 2x4 yet!
